Job Summary of Custodial Worker:

The role is an introductory position involving a range of cleaning tasks that vary from light to heavy, completed either independently in specific zones or as a crew member. With supervision, the employee carries out duties during the assigned shift to maintain the cleanliness of designated areas and perform any related tasks as requested.

The opportunity to transition to the role of Custodial Worker is available to employees who have completed two years in their current position, subject to evaluation and approval from the supervisor and appropriate administrator.

At this stage of the Custodial Worker series, individuals engage in a diverse array of cleaning tasks, spanning from light to heavy duties that can be conducted autonomously in specific zones or as part of a group. Working under general guidance, the employee fulfills their tasks throughout the shift to uphold the cleanliness of allocated areas and performs related duties as necessary.

Responsibilities of Custodial Worker:

  • Applies safety equipment, resources, and protocols to execute job tasks as mandated; reports fire, sanitation, and safety concerns, as well as maintenance needs, to the relevant supervisor.
  • Acts promptly to address immediate safety and operational challenges within the educational facility, such as vandalism, alarms, or damage, to mitigate risks and maintain a productive learning environment; furnishes reports on conducted activities as required by the relevant administrator.
  • Complies with a range of regulations at the local, state, federal, and district levels when storing equipment and supplies, prioritizing safety by maintaining equipment in good working order and keeping thorough maintenance records and reports.
  • Adheres to state and federal safety and health regulations to safeguard district property and direct visitors effectively.
  • Engages in District and/or College-provided training or information sessions to adopt new information and technology in the execution of job duties.
  • Those who are given a communication device should ensure they have it with them and be willing to undertake general custodial duties when necessary.
  • Leverages computer technology for the purpose of accessing and managing information essential for work duties.
  • Displays effective communication through speaking, writing, and digital platforms.
  • Manages the operation of equipment such as District vehicles, electric carts, power lifts, cardboard balers, forklifts, and more; may involve working with ladders.
  • Transfers various objects (such as tools, equipment, and supplies) to maintain the availability of materials needed at the job site.
  • Carries out additional assignments as given.
  • Tasks include cleaning and maintaining floors in rooms, stairways, and public areas, along with vacuuming and caring for rugs and carpets.
  • Handles restroom and shower sanitation; performs furniture waxing and polishing; cleans and organizes office and lobby spaces; washes windows, walls, window shades, and blinds; dusts surfaces including walls, ceilings, air vents, and light fixtures.
  • Clears writing implements from boards, including chalk and dry erase markers.
  • Cleans up garbage and separates recyclables into designated recycling units.
  • Operates cleaning tools such as scrubbers, buffers, waxers, and vacuums as part of the job responsibilities.
  • Refurbishes janitorial and cleaning products; organizes cleaning tools and materials; supports in overseeing the inventory of cleaning and relevant supplies by tracking amounts and notifying leads when necessary.
  • Turns off the lighting fixtures and secures the entryways.
  • Moves and rearranges chairs, tables, desks, and other furniture and equipment for special events and facility set-ups, according to specifications.
  • Tasks are carried out in diverse environments, whether indoors or outdoors, and involve repetitive actions such as lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling.
  • Reviews campus amenities to ascertain that they are in a condition that permits safe operation, adorned and tidy, and to detect any needed repairs resulting from vandalism, equipment failures, or adverse weather conditions.

Ability to:

  • Demonstrate understanding of, sensitivity to, and respect for the diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds, disability, and sexual orientation of community college students, faculty and staff.
  • Operate and maintain a variety of custodial equipment.
  • Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Observe safety requirements and safe work practices and methods as required.
  • Perform routine work involving moderate to heavy physical labor.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative work relationships.

  • Consistently stand, walk, and sit for extended periods throughout the day.
  • Ability to ascend, lower, crouch, extend, apply force, pull, grasp, and carry out repetitive movements.
  • Ascend ladders with varying degrees of elevation.
  • Aptitude for moving effectively through narrow areas including crawl spaces, attics, and utility tunnels.
  • Raise and move items up to 60 pounds, falling within the moderate to heavy range.

Qualification of Custodial Worker:

  • Respecting and understanding the different academic, socioeconomic, ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds, disabilities, and sexual orientations that are part of the community college environment.
  • The necessary criteria includes finishing twelfth grade and demonstrating experience in custodial or janitorial roles.
  • License or Certification
  • Possessing a valid California driver's license in class C.
