Job Summary of Maintenance Worker:

This role is an introductory level job that includes a range of cleaning duties, from minor to more intensive tasks, completed either alone in designated zones or as part of a team. With oversight, the worker carries out responsibilities throughout their shift to maintain the cleanliness of designated spaces and handle any additional duties as needed.

After the supervisor's assessment and approval from the relevant administrator, the employee can transition to the role of Maintenance Worker once they have worked in their current position for two years.

This installment in the Maintenance Worker series focuses on a range of cleaning duties, spanning from light to intensive tasks carried out either solo in designated areas or as part of a team. The individual undertakes responsibilities under broad oversight, completing assignments throughout the shift to uphold the tidiness of designated spaces and engaging in additional tasks as needed.

Responsibilities of Maintenance Worker:

  • Utilizes protective gear, tools, and protocols to carry out job responsibilities as necessary; notifies the relevant supervisor of any fire, hygiene, or security risks and maintenance requirements.
  • Addresses urgent safety or operational issues such as facility damage, alarms, or vandalism promptly to ensure immediate resolution and uphold a conducive learning environment; submits activity reports as needed by the relevant administrator.
  • Adheres to local, state, federal, and district guidelines when organizing and storing equipment and supplies, ensuring compliance with regulations while also keeping equipment safely operational and implementing preventative maintenance measures.
  • Guides guests and protects district premises while following safety and health laws at the state and national levels.
  • Attends and engages in training sessions and informational events offered by the District or College to integrate new knowledge and technologies into current job responsibilities.
  • It is expected that individuals should possess a communication device if it is provided to them and should remain accessible for various custodial responsibilities.
  • Utilizes a computer to access and retrieve data necessary for completing work tasks.
  • Demonstrates proficient communication skills in spoken, written, and digital forms.
  • Utilizes machinery, including but not limited to District automobiles, electric carts, lifts, balers, and forklifts; may require the use of ladders.
  • Carries a variety of objects (such as tools, gear, and materials) to make sure that necessary items are on hand at the work location.
  • Carries out additional tasks as required.
  • The job involves sweeping, scrubbing, and mopping various surfaces such as floors, hallways, and public areas while also performing tasks like stripping, waxing, and finishing floors.
  • Sanitizes and sterilizes bathrooms and showers; dusts, buffs, and shines furniture; tidies up workspaces and entrance areas; washes windows, walls, window coverings, and blinds; wipes down walls, ceilings, air ducts, and light fittings.
  • Erases markings from chalkboards and whiteboards, commonly known as dry erase boards.
  • Removes garbage and empties recycling bins while organizing recyclables into appropriate containers.
  • Utilizes scrubbing machines, polishers, wax applicators, vacuums, and similar devices for cleaning tasks.
  • Replenishes janitorial and cleaning products, organizes cleaning tools and materials, and helps manage the stock of cleaning items by tracking quantities and informing supervisors when necessary.
  • Lights are switched off and doors are secured.
  • Repositions and adjusts seating, tables, workstations, and other furnishings and gear during special occasions and facility arrangements, as per guidelines given.
  • Operates in various settings, including both indoor and outdoor locations, and involves regular tasks of lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling objects.
  • Conducts examinations of campus buildings to guarantee they are safe and well-maintained, identifying any damages caused by vandalism, equipment malfunctions, or extreme weather conditions.

  • Proficiency in navigating through confined spaces like crawl spaces, attics, and utility tunnels.
  • Lift objects weighing up to 60 pounds, ranging from moderate to heavy in weight.

Qualification of Maintenance Worker:

  • Understanding of, sensitivity to, and respect for the diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds, disability, and sexual orientation of community college students, faculty and staff.
  • Any combination equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade and experience in custodial or janitorial work.
  • License or Certification
  • Possession of a valid class C California driver's licens
